Today, April 2, on World Autism Awareness Day, the Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of Nigeria, (AIDDN) joins families, persons with Autism, service providers and policymakers to promote understanding, advance acceptance and call for inclusive supports and rights.<\/p>\n
AIDDN supports the rights, welfare and inclusion of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, through advocacy.<\/p>\n
Key messages
\n– Dignity and inclusion: Every person with Autism deserves respect, equal opportunity and full participation in community life.
\n– Early supports: Timely diagnosis and access to evidence-based services, health, communication, education and family respite and improve outcomes across the lifespan.
\n– Inclusive education and employment: Schools and workplaces must be prepared to accommodate and support persons with autism through training, accommodations and supported employment programs.
\n– Rights and protections: Policies should protect persons with autism from discrimination and institutionalization and align with human-rights frameworks.
\n– Investment in services: Increased funding for community-based services, workforce development and research is essential to meet growing needs.<\/p>\n
